Помогите понять почему здесь использованы эти времена :

1. I walked over. Suddenly I smelt something very strong and unpleasant. The smell was coming from the dark liquid on the floor. 'It smells like tar,' I said. (Интересует фраза the smell was coming from the dark liquid on the floor, почему здесь использовали past continuos (progressive) ? )
2.He was smiling and rubbing his hands together. (Опять же past continuos)
3.Bartholomew Sholto must have been interested in chemistry. A glass tube had broken and a dark liquid had spilt onto the floor. Holmes gave a loud cry of joy.
(Интересует фраза "A glass tube had broken and a dark liquid had spilt onto the floor.")
Почему используется Past perfect после "A glass tube had broken" ? Сперва стекляная трубка сломалась, что предшествует другому действию, поэтому стоит Past perfect, но затем использовали его снова, когда на мой взгляд нужно просто Past simple в предложении "and a dark liquid had spilt onto the floor."
На мой взгляд правильно оформить так : A glass tube had broken and a dark liquid spilt onto the floor.
