Nature ecosystems change with time but ramaine more or less the same from one year to the next.They are said to be in a state of dynamic equilibrium or a steady state.Ecosystem stability is the ability of an ecosystem to resist change (inertia) or return to its oroginal condition after it is disturbed(resilience).Biotic and abiotic components of an ecosystem cause the increase and decrease of population and ultimately determine ecosystem balance.Those that increase population size are called growth factors:those that depress it re called reduction factors,which collectively produce environmental resistance.
Species diversity is considered by many ecologists to be one of the more important factors determining ecosystem stability although direct evidence supporting this hypothesis is rare.We do know that simpifying ecosystems by reducting species diversity trends to make them more vulnerable to insects ,averse weather,and disease-producing organisms. Small shifts in the biotic or abiotic growth or reduction factors may temporarily tip ecoystem balance ,but appropriate responses within the biological community can return the system to normal.Larger shifts may result in a dramatic destailization of the ecosystem,resulting in its collapse.
