Now I suggest you listen to the information about the history of the Paralympic Games.

ПРИЛОЖЕНИЕ 2

The Paralympic Games, for athletes with a disability, have always been held in the same year as the Olympic Games and since 1988 in Seoul the Paralympics have taken place at the same venues as the Olympics too.

Although sports for disabled athletes have existed for more than 100 years, the history of the Paralympics is a relatively short one. The movement began on the day of the opening ceremony for the 1948 London Olympics - 28th July - when the Stoke Mandeville Games were held for the first time.

Towards the end of the Second World War, the British government had asked Dr Ludwig Guttmann to found the National Spinal Injuries Centre at Stoke Mandeville Hospital. Guttmann introduced sport as an aid for rehabilitation and remedial treatment as well as a form of recreation.

Those first Stoke Mandeville Games, for athletes with spinal cord injuries, saw two British teams with 14 former servicemen and two former servicewomen compete in archery on the hospital grounds. It became an annual event and in 1952 Dutch ex-servicemen joined in, thereby establishing the International Stoke Mandeville Games.

When Rome hosted the International Stoke Mandeville Games in 1960, it was the first time the same city had hosted both the Olympics and the Games for disabled athletes. This event has gone down in history as the first Paralympic Games.

Going for gold.

( interview)

' I couldn't believe it

when I heard the words

"world record", 'she

said. 'I almost cried'.

Deborah Brennan is a gold medalist from Tellford in England. She won the 200 metres wheelchair sprint at the Paralympic Games in Sydney, Australia. She finished in 33.67 seconds, beating the world record by one second.

'I couldn't believe it when I heard the words "world record", 'she said. 'I almost cried.'

Deborah also nearly won the 400 metres race, but as she was racing round the track, the front wheel of her chair went into an opponent's lane. She finished first, but the judges disqualified her.

It wasn't easy for Deborah to get to the top. She was born with cerebral palsy, and she can't use her legs very much, and only began racing four years ago. It's an expensive sport, too. Racing chairs cost £3,500, and most of her training takes place at the Alexander Stadium in Birmingham, 50 kilometres from her home. Fortunately, she got some money from the National Lottery. 'The Lottery money helped me get the best equipment,' she says.

Deborah loves her sport. She spends a lot of time training, but she also enjoys listening to music and playing computer games. And she likes football. She's an Aston Villa fan.

Her dad, who is also her coach, is now helping her to train for the next Paralympics. Her ambition is to become the next big star of wheelchair sprinting, like British Paralympic gold medallist Tanni Grey-Thompson.
